- Security measures in place
- Services and amenities available
By spending a little time online, you can reduce the amount of time you'll spend driving around and touring different facilities.
Once you've narrowed down the list of possible selections, drop in and ask some questions and request a tour. A tour can help make the decision on which facility to go with much easier to make. Some of the things to look for when touring around the property include:
- A well-lit facility, both indoors and out
- Video surveillance technology
- Computer controlled access and electronic keypads

Do Your Own Due Diligence

Consider how you will store your items in a general public storage or commercial storage unit. High-valued items should be stored in the back of your unit so they are not the first thing seen. It's rare for an entire storage unit to be completely emptied out without anyone noticing. The harder your valuable possessions are to find/grab, the better the chance of them remaining in your locker.
Some facilities allow a renter to provide their own locks. If that's the case with the unit you've chosen, use a lock that's resistant to bolt cutters, such as a disk lock or a cylinder lock. By taking the extra step of making sure your unit is more difficult to enter, you stand a really good chance of avoiding any burglary attempts from occurring in the first place.
