6 Things You Need to Know Before Renting a Storage Unit

Before renting a storage unit, think about these six things.

The boxes are packed, labelled, and ready to be placed into a storage unit. Now it's time to find a storage facility nearby. However, there are a couple of storage options available, and you may find yourself wondering which one is better suited to your needs.

Before signing a rental agreement with the closest facility, it's important to look for certain things. To help you pick the best facility for your needs, we've compiled a list of the six things you should know before renting a Kelowna storage locker.

1. No Two Storage Facilities Are the Same

Each and every storage facility offers different services. This includes the rental rates for the units, the sizes available, and the unit availability. Before choosing a facility, ask about or investigate:

  • Security measures
  • Cleanliness
  • Temperature control
  • Additional services offered (like packing materials, pallet jacks, forklifts, and loading docks)
  • Current promotions
  • Customer service

2. Fluctuating Storage Unit Rental Rates

Some facilities will offer a discount for the first few months of your rental period to entice you to rent from them. Although this may seem like a great deal at the time, be sure to ask when the rate will increase and how much it will be at that time to avoid any billing surprises.

3. Climate Control Availability

If you've got items that require a stable, temperature controlled environment, it's important to ask if the unit you'd like to rent offers this service. Some facilities offer climate control while others do not. However, this service may come attached with a premium price tag.

4. Speak to the Storage Team in Person

Trusting your possessions to people you've never met before can be difficult for some people. If that's you, it's important to visit the facility in advance and meet the team that'll be tasked with taking care of your belongings. Ask questions and ask to go on a tour of the facility. Great customer service can be much more important than finding the cheapest storage unit rental.

5. Take Advantage of Special Offers and Promotions

A storage facility that offers great promotions and discounts can be great when a storage budget is involved. Look for places that offer free move in trucks and drivers to help ease the financial burden of moving your possessions from one location to another.

6. Be Sure to Ask About Content Insurance

In most cases the storage facility is not responsible for placing insurance on the contents in your locker. If that's the case, be sure to speak with your insurance provider before having your contents placed into storage. The provider can add a content insurance clause to your existing policy.
