Critters love seeking shelter in RVs just as much as we do. It's only natural that as the weather gets colder, little pests and rodents seek out warm shelters. However, that doesn't mean they need to seek shelter in your RV. When you park your rig at an RV storage facility for the winter, there are a few ways you can deter these little pests from seeking solace in your summertime hideaway.
1. Remove the Food
This is by far the best thing you can do to deter small animals and rodents from moving into your RV over the winter. However, don't just remove what you consider food. Remove everything that may be attractive to a critter. This can include items from dry goods to spices to rolls of toilet paper or paper towel.
Rodents will use anything they can find to build a nest, so it's best to remove the temptation. Dried goods, even the ones stored in plastic containers, should definitely be removed too. It may take some time, but those little critter's teeth will chew through just about anything.
2. Seal Everything
If a critter is set on claiming your RV as his own this winter, he'll do just about everything he can to get inside. In fact, a mouse only needs an opening the size of a dime to squeeze into. By sealing firewalls, reinforcing spray foam installation, and ensuring the taps and drains are sealed off, you'll be able to reduce the rodent's chances of getting in.
3. Lay Out Mothballs and Mousetraps
Before you lock up your RV and leave it in a secure storage facility, put out a couple of bowls of mothballs. Not only will this keep the moths out, it may deter rodents as well since they're not fond of the odour either.
There are also a number of different mousetraps available that can help keep rodents away. Some of the most popular ones include:
- Snap traps - these are the iconic ones that have been appearing in kids cartoons for years
- Electronic traps - there are a few different varieties of these traps, from electrocution to sound emitting
- Multiple catch traps - this no-kill kind of trap acts like a little mouse house; once the mouse goes in, he can't come out again until you spring the latch
- Glue traps - these traps are for multi-purpose use and can catch anything from rodents to spiders
