Store Fragile Items Self-Storage

Look for the best storage solutions when it comes to protecting your fragile items.

If you're preparing for a move or need to store away fragile items such as antiques, heirlooms and documents for safekeeping, there is the right way to pack and store them, and there is the wrong way.

You'll not only want to prevent damage during transportation by packing said items in the best manner possible; you'll want to find the best storage solutions to ensure your items will be protected from environmental damage, the elements, as well as from theft.

Follow these packing, storage and moving tips to make sure your fragile items remain unbreakable:

1. Store up on boxes and packing materials

When it comes to packing fragile materials, it's best to stay away from those used and flimsy boxes you get from the supermarket. You'll need sturdy boxes and packing materials that can protect your items in case they are dropped, jostled or bumped.   Packing the properly also ensures that they will not be damaged by the elements.

Some storage facilities offer packing materials and moving supplies at affordable prices.

Look for:

  • Moving boxes
  • Bubble wrap
  • Packing paper
  • Wardrobe boxes
  • Mirror boxes
  • Stretch wrap
  • Packing tape
  • Mattress covers
  • TV and furniture covers

2. Use the right tools and equipment

Once you've packed up everything securely, you'll want to make sure it remains in one piece while you make your way to your self storage unit. Don't lift heavy items on your own. Instead, seek help. Look for a storage facility that offers a move-in truck and driver as well as tools and equipment such as ramps and dollies. For heavier items such as antique furniture pieces or large files, see if the facility has loading docks and forklifts, with accredited drivers, as well as pallet and pallet jacks.

3. Look for climate controlled storage lockers

This is especially important if you are storing items such as art, books, wooden furniture, antiques, electronics, and documents, which can react to moisture, or if you plan to store your items away for longer than a few months. Look for a heated storage space that has a consistent indoor temperature of between 12-to-29°C, which is normally enough to maintain humidity levels so that moisture does not become a problem.

4. Take cover when storing items

Rain can be your worst enemy when storing away fragile items in self storage lockers that have outside access. To protect your items from getting wet, look for storage units that have covered bays or a drive-through covered access, where loading and unloading can be done under cover and out of the elements such as snow, rain, wind, and excessive heat. This will also make it more comfortable for you when moving said items.

5. Make sure the facility is secure

If you are storing valuable heirlooms or are in need of important document storage, you want to make all measures have been taken to make sure the facility is secure.

Look for facilities that have:

  • 24-hour surveillance
  • Controlled access
  • Adequate lighting
  • Heat detectors
