4 Reasons Why Your Home Isn't Always the Best Place For Storage

Using your garage for storage doesn’t offer much protection from theft and damage.

Don’t leave that antique credenza inherited from your Great Aunt Millie to be decimated by termites in your attic. Storing precious belongings in your home can make them susceptible to damage from pests, humidity, disasters, theft, and more. Here are four reasons why your home isn’t always the best place for storage:

1. Dampness lurks

It doesn’t take long for water and humidity to permeate and destroy your belongings. Avoid a mouldy situation by storing items of value away from damp areas such as garages, cellars, or crawl spaces. If those are the only storage spaces in your home, consider an outside facility that offers temperature or climate-controlled units.

Objects that can be damaged by humidity include:

  • Wood and leather furniture
  • Heirlooms and antiques
  • Household appliances and electronics
  • Business documents and records
  • Musical instruments
  • Artwork and photos
  • Clothing and linens

2. Pesky situation

Despite all our best efforts, sometimes it’s hard to keep insects and other pests from infesting our homes. Worst of all, most pests such as mice and cockroaches love those dark and dank places such as attics and basements, where we tend to store away our belongings. Keep pests at bay by packing and sealing goods in air-tight storage containers or bags, and cover all mattresses and upholstered items. Better still, look for pest-controlled storage units in Kelowna.

3. Disaster alert

There is no turning back from damage caused by disasters such as fire or flood. Storing your most valuable assets away from your home is the best way to keep them safe. Place relevant documents, such as insurance papers, in a safe deposit box or a record storage facility. If you have several items you wish to store, consider a storage container rental. A MI-BOX® container can be delivered to your door, kept on your property for as long as you need, or picked up and stored in a warehouse.

4. Fighting thieves

Some of the hot ticket items for thieves in the Okanagan include recreational vehicles, bicycles, and even boats. There is a danger in keeping these expensive and valuable items at home, as they often can be accessed easily from your driveway, garage, or shed. Keep the burglars at bay by storing your valuables in a secure storage facility that offers RV and boat storage. Make sure the facility has security measures such as:

  • Fencing
  • Passcode entry gates
  • 24-hour video surveillance
  • On-site personnel
  • After-hours security patrol
  • Security lighting
