Unwanted smells can happen when you are using long-term storage, but they can be treated!

When storing your items for a long period of time, unpleasant odours can arise from not being used. There are many factors that contribute to these stinky aromas like, pet dander or stains, mold, and mildew, and untreated furniture and clothing. There are many ways to prevent smells from arising but if you haven't deodorized your items before moving in, don't worry! There are ways to address odours when they are present in your storage unit

Vinegar Is A Natural Deodorizer!

White vinegar kills germs and mildew with acidity. A great way to address these smells is to apply a vinegar solution to your items already in. Simply place open containers with white vinegar in your storage unit. The white vinegar will slowly evaporate, acidifying the air and the condensation inside the space, killing mildew in hard to reach areas!

Use Scented Products

If you don't like the scent of vinegar, which is common, just replace the unpleasant smell with one that you love! Add fabric dryer sheets to your boxes, in your shoes, or in clothing bags. This method will not prevent recurring smells or prevent mold or mildew, but it will bring a renewed scent to your stored items when you are unpacking!

If you are looking for a solution that smells great and will help to absorb moisture, sprinkle baking soda or cedar wood chips in your storage boxes. If you are already packed up in your storage unit, you can place blocks of cedarwood into the corners of your storage container

Deodorize Before Packing Your Storage Unit

While you are packing your boxes and storing your clothes, keep a spray bottle handy with a mix of baking soda and vinegar inside. This is the perfect way to prevent smells from happening while your items are sitting in storage. Cleaning your furniture and items that will hold onto smells and will go a long way in keeping your storage unit fresh.

As professionals, we highly recommend reserving a climate-controlled storage unit. By regulating the heat and the humidity, it will prevent your belongings from retaining moisture. Once moisture enters your boxes or gets absorbed by furniture, that is when smells occur. Ultimately, a climate-controlled unit will keep your belongings fresh while they aren't being used.
