Winter Tips: Moving into a Commercial or General Public Storage Unit

Public Storage

If you're moving your belongings into a commercial or general public storage unit at your local storage facility, we've compiled a few tips to keep things running smoothly.

Moving your possessions into a storage facility, especially one that offers commercial or general public storage for household goods, during the colder winter months can be a little bit of a daunting task. Besides the usual moving challenges, you'll most likely find yourself dealing with icy sidewalks and roads, chilly temperatures, and snow covered walkways. Fortunately, the winter weather in the Okanagan is generally mild and rarely delivers less than ideal conditions. However, if you do find yourself moving during the peak of winter, these tips can keep you off the slippery slope of cold weather moving.

1. Consider a Professional Moving Service. When the weather outside keeps you bundled up in doors, hiring an experienced moving service may be your best defence against cold-weather moving mishaps. When looking for a Kelowna storage facility, choose one that offers a complimentary delivery truck and driver. You can take comfort in knowing your items will be delivered safely to the rented commercial or general public storage unit at your chosen facility safely, no matter what the road conditions may look like.

2. Keep the Walkways Clear. If your moving day is forecasted to be a snowy one, be proactive and stay on top of the snow removal. Be sure to sprinkle salt down to keep the ice away too. When your arms are loaded up with boxes, watching the ground for ice and snow can be a little tricky. If the sidewalks are well maintained, you can spend less time focusing on where you step and more time moving your belongings.

3. Pack Temperature-Sensitive Items Separately. Many small electronics are extremely sensitive to frigid temperatures. To ensure they aren't damaged during the move to your storage unit, make a note on which box they're in. You may want to pack these items separately and take them with you personally instead of sending them ahead in a truck. It's also a good idea to look for units that are temperature controlled when choosing a local storage facility.

4. Be Prepared for Extreme Weather Conditions. If you think you may encounter some inclement weather on moving day, be prepared. Keep extra sand, salt, and shovels close by, along with extra toques, mittens, and scarves. A thermos full of hot coffee or tea will also help keep you warm during the big move too.
