Storage Tips: 5 Ways to Winterize your RV so it's Ready for Next Year

RV winter storage tips

Protect your motorhome by winterizing it for RV storage.

Whether you drove across the country this past spring, or went camping around BC in the summer, putting a lot of kilometres on your old road warrior usually means you need time to give her a rest. Your home on wheels should not only be maintained before you stack numbers on your odometer, but also after, especially if you plan to book RV storage for winter.

Be sure to read your RV owner's manual before winterizing your RV, and read these helpful tips so you'll be ready to hit the road for your next adventure.

1. Drain and flush your plumbing

Everyone knows how damaging a burst pipe in your home can be. The same problem can occur if the fluids in your RV are left to freeze. Draining your RV's system can be done in a few simple steps:

  • Drain both black and grey water in the holding tanks. Look for RV self storage options that offer sani-dump stations, where you can dispose of wastewater safely.
  • Drain the waterlines (do this to both the hot and cold water lines) and your fresh water tank. Make sure you put the plugs back in after adding antifreeze.
  • Bypass and then flush your hot water heater by first running the hot faucet in the kitchen or the relief valve on the water heater itself. This will alleviate the pressure.
  • Install a water pump converter (kits are available) or tubing and connect it from the water pump inlet into a gallon jug of RV antifreeze.
  • Keep all your faucets and valves open
  • Pour non-toxic RV antifreeze into your drains and toilet for added protection
  • Don't forget to check for antifreeze in your outside water valve and shower, if you have one

2. Remove and store batteries

If you are using outdoor to park your RV or boat over winter, it is a good idea to remove and store your batteries in a dry place, as the battery fluid in a discharged lead-acid battery can freeze in minus double-digit weather. Keep your stored batteries in good shape by removing any corrosion with a mixture of baking soda and water. You should also clean the terminals using a steel brush. Fully charge your battery before storing it and add distilled water to battery fluid if levels are low.

3. Do a final inspection

Once your plumbing and electrical maintenance is looked after, it's a good idea to go over all other areas of your RV. First make sure everything is cleaned. Check to see that there are no cracks on your roof and body seams, windows or underneath your unit. If so, apply a protective sealant and repair as needed. Service all your locks and hinges with a lubricant. Make sure all your gas appliances are turned off and that no perishables or food have been left in the fridge or drawers that will attract rodents or insects.

4. Look for secure self-storage options

If you have no room in your garage or carport, you'll need to find safe and secure boat and RV storage in Kelowna. A quality self storage unit should provide the following options:

  • Spacious, paved stalls
  • Fences and security cameras
  • Sani-dump and water station
  • After-hours security
