Campus Life: 3 Ways to Get Ready for Back-to-School Storage

Students leaving home for school should take advantage of extra storage space off-campus to safe-keep their belongings.

UBCO statistics show that 9,000 students were enrolled at the university in the 2018-19 school year, with more than a quarter coming from outside the Okanagan.

While some may find rooms or shared accommodation off-campus, 17 percent of students are reported to be living at on-campus residences. These include small, furnished dorm rooms with little extra space. We look at ways students can use back-to-school storage to their benefit when moving into a dorm or small apartment.

1. Think of What You Need to Pack

Before you leave for school, figure out what you need to bring with you. When packing your school supplies, clothes, furniture, and equipment, think about the weather in the Okanagan, which can go from 20°C temperatures in September to -10°C in the middle of winter. Along with a warm winter coat and sturdy boots, you may also want to bring such items as:

  • A Bicycle
  • Skis
  • Snowshoes
  • Comforter/bedspread/blankets
  • Sweaters and other bulky winter clothes
  • Fan
  • Heater
  • Camping gear
  • Sports equipment

2. Organize Your Room for Maximum Efficiency

When arriving at your new residence with your moving boxes, first assess your new living space to see how much (or little) room you have. Most students realize there isn’t enough space in their unit for two season’s worth of clothes or other rarely used items. We suggest placing your most used or “daily” items in their appropriate place. Then, for what’s leftover, see what current seasonal items will fit into your space without items spilling out, getting in the way. Make room with wall shelving or ceiling hooks for hanging units. Invest in bins you can place under your bed.

3. Store the Leftovers and Items You Don’t Need Right Away

After you've done your organizing, you may find that you have several leftover or seasonal items and nowhere to put them. Renting an affordable storage unit near campus is a great way to keep your extra clothes, sports equipment, and those items you may need in winter. It's also a safe option to protect your valuables from possible theft.
