5 Tips for Using Portable Storage Containers in Kelowna During Winter

Portable Storage Containers in Kelowna
Protect your summer toys in winter by placing kayaks, canoes, and SUPs in a portable storage container.

Whether staying home for the holidays or joining the flock of snowbirds south, there are several reasons why residents in Kelowna use portable storage containers such as a MI-BOX® in winter. Affordable, secure, accessible, and mobile, they can be used as a substitute in place of your garage, basement, or attic to store your summer or winter gear, or if you are undergoing a renovation, or need to clear a room in your home for guests. Here’s why it’s better to use portable storage in winter, and what you can use it for:

1. Summer tires

Okanagan roads can be treacherous in winter and the reason why people tend to change over to high-performance or studded winter tires to handle the ice, slush, and snow.

A MI-BOX® offers a cool, dark, and dry place to store your summer tires from the elements. Tires should be cleaned and kept away from solvents or liquids. It is OK to stack your tires if they are on rims. However, it’s recommended you rotate them every four weeks to keep them in prime condition. Make sure to check and adjust the tire pressure when removing your tires from the storage container before placing them back on your vehicle.

2. Summer toys

With our many beaches, lakes, trails, and swimming pools, outdoor recreation is part of life in the Okanagan. A MI-BOX® container provides a safe space to store all of your outdoor toys, including:

  • Pool and beach toys
  • Bicycles and scooters
  • Canoes, kayaks, and SUPs
  • Sports equipment
  • Games such as lawn darts, bocce, badminton, tennis, croquet
  • ATVs, motorcycles, and jet skis
  • Inflatable pools

Make sure to clean all your toys before placing them inside your storage rental.

Let the air out of all inflatables. Remove batteries and drain gas/propane from all battery or fuel-operated items.

3. Winter toys

Another benefit of a storage container rental on your property is it offers a replacement for your garage and extra storage for things you have no room for in your home but wish to use over winter. You can use a MI-BOX® to store winter items such as:

  • Skis and snowboards
  • Toboggans and sleds
  • Snowmobiles
  • Fat bikes

4. Outdoor furniture

Measuring 16 ft.-long, 7 ft.-wide, and 8 ft. tall, a MI-BOX® is large enough to fit your patio furniture and barbecue and keep them safe and dry until the days become longer.

5. Before you store

While most items can be safely stored in a MI-BOX®, it's important to note that winter weather can affect some of the things you wish to place inside. Cover items that may be affected by the elements and pay special attention when storing:

  • Glass and wood items
  • Cleaning products
  • Carbonated beverages
  • Wine and canned goods
  • Clothing
  • Propane tanks
  • RV, vehicle batteries
