It’s been a long, strange start to spring, with lots of time spent at home. Time is on Your Side
With many of us at home, we may find ourselves with a little more time to spend on cleaning projects than normal. Use that time to your advantage by:
- Blocking an hour to two a day to declutter your home room by room.
- Gathering supplies you’ll need, including cleaning products and boxes.
- Booking self-storage in which to place seasonal and excess items you won’t need in summer.
- Taking as many breaks as you see fit. Make sure to stretch, drink plenty of fluids, and smell the flowers.
Work Your Way to the Top
When it comes to decluttering and cleaning your home, it helps to start from the bottom and work your way to the top. Begin with the smaller jobs. Clear out a closet or a bookshelf, or scrub your bathroom sinks. Then tackle the dusting, mopping, and vacuuming. Leave cleaning that crusty, old oven, or overfilled fridge for last.
Whistle While You Work
Most of us find cleaning a chore and a bore. Make it fun by putting on your favourite tunes or audiobook while you work. Get your family members to help. Stage a competition of who can finish their job first. Offer a prize by making their favourite meal or ordering pizza afterward.
Don’t Forget to Go Outside
Besides getting fresh air, it's essential to check your property every spring for all jobs that need doing. Clean out your gutters, prune trees and shrubs, mow the grass, clean up the debris, and don’t forget to turn on your outdoor taps.
Sort Through your Seasonal Stuff
While you’re at it, don’t forget to check your shed, garage, or basement and sort through all the seasonal items that you will not need until the following winter. If you lack room on your property, look for storage units that can hold:
- Winter tires
- Recreational items such as sleds, snowmobiles, and skis (don’t forget boots and poles)
- Christmas decorations
- Shovels, snowblowers, and other snow removal equipment
- Winter clothing
