4 Ways Storage Facilities are Better than the Garage

storage better than garage

Give the garage back to your car and store your stuff in a storage locker instead.

Your car deserves to be parked in the garage, especially during the snowy winter season. Like many other homeowners in the Okanagan, you may find yourself turning your garage into your own personal storage locker. But how nice would it be to park your car in there again?

Here are four reasons, besides being able to park your car in your garage, why you should consider renting a unit at a local Kelowna self-storage facility.

1. Protect your items from potential flooding.

In recent years, Kelowna and the rest of the Okanagan have been at the mercy of flooding. These floods range in severity but have caused millions of dollars in property damage. If your home or small business is located in an at-risk area, consider renting a storage unit for your stuff. When the water comes rushing in, you’ll have peace of mind that the items in your unit are safely tucked away.

2. Protect your items from theft.

No matter where your small business or home is located, it may be at risk for theft. When you rent a storage unit in a secure local storage facility, your items will be protected around the clock.

Most storage facilities offer computer controlled access, surveillance cameras, 24-hour mobile security, and electronic security. This means, your items are much safer in storage facilities than in your garage at home.

3. Your items could benefit from climate control.

If you’re storing items that are sensitive to the changing climates, like paper files or electronics or furniture, you’ll likely want to consider moving them over to a professional facility.

Garages make wonderful interim storage solutions, but they’re really not good for long term storing. Because they’re rarely insulated, garages are susceptible to the highs and lows of our Okanagan climate. Although it may seem mild in comparison to other provinces, there’s still a chance that these swings in temperature and humidity can cause damage to your items.

4. A public storage locker may be cheaper.

It sounds counter-intuitive but it’s partly true. When your garage is so full that you can’t park your vehicles inside, your car is susceptible to theft and damage. When either of these situations occur, you may be left holding a bill that’s much more expensive than a storage locker rental.
