Home Selling Tips: How to Use a Storage Unit

Staging a home by placing excess furniture in a storage unit or container will make it more appealing to buyers.

With today’s hot real estate market, you may be thinking about selling your home. Whether you’re upgrading to a bigger home by the lake or downsizing to a townhome, you’ll want to optimize the sale of your existing home. Staging your home is where the benefits of a storage unit or a storage container rental come into play.

Storage will not only help you de-clutter, but it will allow you and your real estate agent to decide on what furniture pieces to use for staging your home and what to store away until you move. Plus, you’ll save time on packing when the day comes, and your belongings will be safe when potential buyers come to see your property.

How Storage Helps with Staging Your Home

Clean, neat, and tidy homes show well and command the best prices. Professionally staged houses are designed in a way that makes it easy to imagine yourself moving in and living that de-cluttered lifestyle.

Instill the same intention and desire when staging your home. Go through your house with a critical eye and reduce the amount of furniture and clutter. In professionally staged homes, they often use under-sized furniture to make the rooms look bigger. You can do the same by putting any excess furniture into a self-storage facility.

For example, say you have a comfy couch and an even more comfy “dad” chair in front of the TV; by simply storing the “dad” chair in a storage unit you’ve added an extra three feet of space to the room.

Create Less from More

As you look at your home through the lens of “less creates more,” you’ll find many ways to de-clutter and create space. De-cluttering is also an excellent time to prepare for your move. We all have closets full of books, files, and miscellaneous items that can be packed away in a storage container for a few months. By slowly and methodically going through each room in your home and packing away these little-used items, you’ll be saving yourself a mad dash to pack when your home sells. Take your time and make several trips or use a storage container rental that is conveniently on-site.

Add Security with Storage

Another benefit of “pre-packing” and storing your little-used items in a storage facility is the peace of mind that comes from knowing your belongings are in a safe, secure location. You may want to consider renting a climate-controlled storage unit to store precious wooden furniture, clothing, or electronics.

It may be tempting to save a few bucks and store excess furniture and pre-packed boxes in your garage or basement. Be careful. You want to emphasize your home’s ample storage space and the possibilities of a room. This strategy is ineffective when your basement is stacked floor to ceiling with boxes or your Harley Davidson restoration project is dripping oil on the garage floor.

After you’ve cleared out and de-cluttered, ask a trusted friend (the “neat” one) to come and look at your staged home with fresh eyes. By having a storage container or facility at your disposal, it will be easy to make any additional changes to the staging of your home.
