Heading on an overseas vacation? Flocking south for the winter? Want to free up your garage? Need to free up parking spaces at your business? Learn the ins and outs of vehicle storage, what to look in Kelowna storage rentals, how to get your car ready, and what happens when you need to pick up your vehicle.

Look for the Best Self-Storage Options

A drive-in storage facility is your best option for storing a vehicle. Look for a gated and secure storage area that offers protected parking spaces that are large enough for cars, SUVs, pick-up trucks, RVs, and boats that you can rent by the month or year. If you need motorcycle storage, consider an indoor unit with outside access or drive-through covered access.

Make sure the facility has:

  • 24-hour access
  • Video surveillance
  • Security patrols
  • Passcode entry
  • Lighting
  • Sani-dump and car wash area

Prepare Your Car for Storage

Depending on whether you store your car indoors or outdoors, you’ll need to get your car ready for storage. Some off the things you should do before storing your vehicle include:

  • Wash the exterior and interior of your vehicle and don't forget the undercarriage
  • Fill the gas tank and use a fuel stabilizer
  • Change the oil
  • Inflate the tires and place any spare tires in tire storage
  • Disconnect the battery or use a battery maintainer
  • Use blocks or tire stoppers instead of the parking brake
  • Place an all-weather cover on your vehicle
  • Get specialized insurance to protect your car while in storage

Picking up your Vehicle

When you're ready to get your vehicle out of storage, it's essential to go over this to-do checklist:

  • Inform your storage facility in Kelowna that you are removing your vehicle
  • Make sure you have the proper insurance to drive your vehicle
  • Check under the hood and make sure belts and hoses are not cracked or loose
  • inflate tires if necessary
  • Top off fluids if needed
  • Reconnect the battery and clean terminals
  • Examine brake pads and shocks
  • Ensure lights and signals are working properly
  • Wash the car and freshen the interior
