Moving Boxes: Everything You Need to Know

Portable storage

Moving boxes can come in many different sizes from many different places.

After searching through the 'for sale' listings and walking through countless open houses, you've final found the home you've been looking for. The papers have all been signed, and now it's time to start packing up your belongings before you head to your new home. Before you start, though, you'll need to acquire some moving boxes. Read ahead for a little insight on where to start looking for these moving-day helpers.

Brand Spanking New

Sometimes the simplest way to get your hands on moving boxes is to buy yourself some new ones. This is also the quickest way most of the time too. Plus, if you've got fragile items that require a little delicacy during the big move, new boxes can make the transition from your old home to your new home run smoothly. Now, you're probably wondering where to find new boxes. Here's a quick and clean list of places you can seek out:

  • Self-storage and portable storage rental facilities. These facilities cater to every aspect of the moving process, so it would make sense that they also carry moving boxes and other moving supplies for purchase.
  • Truck rental companies. If you're planning on renting a moving truck for the big day, ask if they also sell (or rent) moving boxes or containers.
  • Office supply stores. These stores don't just carry paper and pens. You can also find items like banker's boxes and other moving supplies there.
  • Moving companies. If you're hiring someone to come and move your possessions for you, ask if they sell boxes too.

Previously Loved

If you're not too picky about the quality of the boxes, there are a lot of places to pick up gently used boxes for peanuts. If you get lucky, you might even find some of these places giving away boxes for free.

  • Grocery stores. With so much incoming inventory arriving daily, grocery stores are constantly throwing away and recycling used boxes. This would be one of the best places to swing into for gently used boxes.
  • Convenience stores. Although these stores hold less inventory than traditional grocery stores, the turnover at these places is high which means more daily (boxed) incoming deliveries.
  • Liquor stores.
  • Department stores.
  • Retail stores.

The Greener Choice

If you prefer a more eco-friendly option, consider using reusable bins. Although this option may be a bit pricier, it's definitely a more sustainable approach to moving. Check out some of these places for plastic tote rentals:

  • Container rental companies. You can even think outside of the regular box, and consider renting a large portable container for all your belongings, like a Kelowna Mi Box storage container.
  • Storage warehouses.
  • Moving companies.
  • Tool and equipment rental companies.
