STORAGE TIPS

Outside Kelowna, Mobile Storage Containers are Homes, Museums and Cafes

Posted on November 30, 2014

To most of us, Kelowna portable storage containers are just that: rectangular metal boxes perfect for storing bikes and microwaves until moving day. But in the eyes of creative architects around the world, portable storage boxes are the perfect foundation for offices, sleeping quarters and viewing art.

Join us as we take a look at some of the most unique ways storage containers are being used beyond the Okanagan.

1. The Portable Café

It's probably hard to imagine your Kelowna storage box rental as the setting where you might sit with a friend and linger over a macchiato and a muffin, but one savvy coffee company has done just that.

In less than two minutes and at the flick of a switch, this portable storage container becomes an illy indoor-outdoor café that opens to customers daily in Trieste, Italy.

2. The Portable Dorms

If you had the pleasure of living in a dorm at college, you probably hung your Tragically Hip posters on the wall of a tiny room in what was much like an apartment building. Imagine rolling over on your supplied twin bed after a night of studying and waking up to the walls of a shipping container.

To solve space shortages and spending cuts, universities in Europe are turning storage containers into student housing complete with windows and wi-fi. Of course, they've also been insulated for fire and sound resistance.

One of the most talked about container dorm rooms is the Spacebox configuration you'e apt to see in the Netherlands.

3. The Portable Museum

You've heard about mobile libraries bringing picture books and novels to rural communities, but have you ever heard of a mobile museum that traveled around the world? The Nomadic Museum is a 45,000 square-feet space made out of 148 mobile storage containers.

Designed by Japanese architect Shigeru Ban, the Nomadic Museum showcases only the work of 'Ashes and Snow,' an exhibit by artist/photographer Gregory Colbert. Unlike our MIBOX Kelowna storage box rentals that are relegated to the Okanagan, these containers move from port to port across the globe. The museum debuted in New York City in 2005. Since then, they've hosted exhibit-goers in California, Mexico and Tokyo.

In addition to art exhibits, students and coffee-lovers, storage containers have also been converted to Hollywood film backdrops. Check out our post Space Centre Storage in Kelowna Finds Hollywood Movies with Storage Container Scenes.
