Win the race like the tortoise when clearing out items for local storage.

Is time not always on your side when it comes to tidying up? Do you feel panic when looking at piles of stuff in your home? Do you need to get things organized for your storage space? Make decluttering, cleaning, packing, and storing a breeze by trying some of these time management techniques. See which of these methods works best for you:

Learn from the Tortoise and the Hare

The Aesop fable of the tortoise and the hare is thousands of years old, but its lessons resonate to this day. Those who use perseverance with steadiness and determination will always win the race. Whether you're moving or need to clear out items for local storage, you can be like the tortoise by:

  • Planning ahead
  • Moving methodically
  • Continuing what you started
  • Thinking about quality over quantity
  • Having a goal in mind
  • Reaching that goal at your own pace

Eat That Frog!

Don't worry. You don't have to consume any frogs to use this time management technique. Coined by business management guru Brian Tracy, author of Eat That Frog!: 21 Great Ways to Stop Procrastinating and Get More Done in Less Time, the Eat That Frog method is best for those who have long-term goals. It involves prioritizing your tasks, starting with the one you least want to do, then working your way up.

When using this method for tidying and cleaning, start with the task that fills you with the most dread, then move on to less stressful jobs, such as packing boxes.

Try the Pomodoro Technique®

Developed by Francesco Cirillo, the Pomodoro Technique® is a time-management method named after an Italian-named tomato kitchen timer.

The basic concept works for all manner of projects, including sorting your belongings for a storage container rental. Follow these main steps:

  1. Decide on a task you wish to complete
  2. Set a timer for 25-minute intervals
  3. Work on one task until the timer goes off
  4. Place a checkmark on a to-do list
  5. Take a short break if you have less than four checkmarks
  6. Take a more extended break after completing more than four intervals and then reset back to step one

Plan out what goes into your storage space with the Eisenhower Matrix.

Decide on what Needs Doing

Known as the Eisenhower Decision Matrix, as US President Dwight D. Eisenhower developed it, this time management technique involves organizing your tasks into four categories:

  • Do
  • Decide
  • Delegate
  • Delete

Select what tasks are essential vs. non-important, and urgent vs. less urgent to help you plan, organize, schedule, and prioritize what needs storing, and what doesn’t.
