Student Storage: How to Manage Living in the Dorm with Self-storage

Avoid a heavy load by placing textbooks and other dorm items you don’t need in self-storage.

With classes in session, there's no time to worry about what you’re going to do with your seasonal items or if you end up moving from the dorm between semesters. If your dorm room is already overloaded or you’re planning to study abroad for a while, see how affordable self-storage can help.

Eight Months, Three Seasons

A typical post-secondary term lasts eight months, which translates as three seasons and ever-changing weather and conditions. As most dorms offer little in the way of storage, it helps to have a secure place for bike storage and other seasonal items near campus. This way, you can easily access them when you need them.

For those students packing for the duration of their term, consider a 4-by-6-ft. storage space for items such as:

  • Winter jackets, boots
  • Rain gear
  • Bicycles and ski equipment
  • Extra set of bedding (comforter, pillows, etc.)
  • Surplus of school supplies, textbooks
  • Small furniture or appliances (if dorm does not come fully furnished)

Sharing the Load

Friendships are inevitable once you enter university or college, and sometimes you meet someone or a group, you like enough to be able to share the load, and this includes renting a storage locker together.

An average-sized 5-by-8-ft. storage box can fit items by a group of students, including:

  • Boxes and bins
  • Bikes
  • Sports equipment
  • Single mattress, small bed
  • Bar fridge
  • Small dresser or desk
