Storage Packing Tips

It helps to use the same size boxes when you pack your mobile storage or self-storage unit.

Whether you are needing mobile storage such as a Kelowna MI-BOX® or are renting a self-storage unit from Space Storage Centre’s secure facility in Kelowna for a residential or commercial move, use our tips and techniques for packing your items for maximum effectiveness and efficiency.

Wrap it Up the Right Way

When preparing your items for moving and storage, it’s important that you not only pack your things as securely as possible but also save space so you can fit your belongings inside your unit and then use methods to be able to access them easily.

Try some of these tips:

  • Use the same size boxes and keep boxes to around the same weight
  • Categorize items from most important to less important
  • Place priority items in clear containers
  • Label boxes using colour coordinated markers or masking tape and number them from most important to least important
  • Wrap dishes and other fragile items in paper and label them accordingly
  • Place small items in dresser drawers
  • Stretch wrap your furniture
  • Put cables, sockets, USB flash drives etc. in sealed sandwich bags and tape them to their coordinating TV, computer, etc.
  • Vacuum seal out-of-season clothing
  • Store rakes, shovels and outdoor equipment in garbage cans

Fill Your Unit the Right Way

Whether you are renting Kelowna mobile storage containers that are delivered to your door or you are travelling to a storage facility to place your items in a storage locker, use these techniques for filling your unit:

  1. Use Space Centre Storage’s locker size estimator to measure which unit will work best for your needs or if renting a mobile storage container in Kelowna, make sure the container is large enough for all of your items
  2. Place the items that you want quick access to at the front of your storage container rental closest to the door
  3. Stack your boxes from heaviest at the bottom to lightest at the top
  4. Make aisles in between your boxes for quick and easy access
  5. For moving storage containers, try to strap down loose items
  6. Do not store items that could leak or are combustible such as paint, paint thinner, oil, propane and solvents

Secure Your Unit the Right Way

Make sure your container rental offers secure storage and use your own padlock for the unit. If storing at a warehouse or mini-storage facility, make sure it has added security features such as:

  • 24-hour surveillance
  • Cameras
  • Electronic gates with coded access
  • Covered drive through or drive-up access
  • Heated storage units
  • Shipping and receiving services
