You’ve just closed on the sale of your house and you need to be out before the end of February. That only means one thing: you’ve got to move during the winter. Snow, ice, unpredictable weather, and cool temperatures are just a few of the hurdles you’ll likely be faced with. You also need to decide if you’re going to use a portable storage unit or a storage facility for the move. Though we can’t do much about the weather conditions, we can help with the latter of the two.
When it comes to moving in the winter, there are a few things that need to happen. You’ll likely need to:
- Be flexible on moving dates, in case inclement weather strikes
- Pack as far in advance as possible
- Shovel walkways, the driveway, and sidewalks frequently at both homes
- Protect your belongings from snow and ice
- Ensure the utilities are set up in your new home before the move
- Keep sand/salt and shovels within reach
Thankfully, there are a couple of moving options available.
Option 1: A MI BOX® Portable Storage Unit
Moving during winter presents a host of moving challenges that don’t accompany summer-time moves. While these challenges might seem difficult, they’re really easy to mitigate if you’re prepared.
PROS: When you use a storage container for moving, you can prepare for the cold weather well in advance. Simply order it up, park it in your driveway, and fill it up at your leisure. Once it’s loaded up and ready to go, call your storage container provider and have them pick it up and deliver it to your new home.
CONS: You may have to shovel the path to it a few times and watch out for ice. Since these units are not climate controlled, you may want to refrain from storing away items that are susceptible to damage caused by cold temperatures, like electronics.
Option 2: Utilizing a Local Storage Facility
If you’re worried about the temperature outside affecting your personal items, a storage locker at a local storage facility may be your best option.
PROS: You can store all kinds of items in your personal locker, from electronics to perishables. The units will be free of snow and ice, and an on-site security team will safely monitor your locker to ensure everything stays exactly as you left it. It’s also a more affordable option, depending on the size of the unit. Some facilities even offer a move-in truck and driver to help simplify your move.
CONS: You won’t have instant access to your belongings.
