Self Storage: What To Do When You Have Too Much Stuff

Self Storage Kelowna

Donating, selling, self-storage and mobile storage options are some of the ways you can get rid of that excess stuff in your home.

Like trees that shed their leaves every fall, we humans also need to shed occasionally. We’re not talking about clothes (although donating clothes you no longer wear is always a good idea). We mean shedding all the excess that takes over your closets, rooms, shelves, and indoor storage spaces. Looking for self-storage outside your home is one way Kelowna’s Space Centre Storage can help you get rid of all that stuff, along with some of these other options:

Keep, Donate, Sell, Trash

Determining what to keep and what to get rid of can be tricky. You can ask yourself if your belongings “spark joy” like Tidying Up guru Marie Kondo does, or you can simply get rid of the things that you no longer use or that don’t fit your home’s design or that you have outgrown. List your belongings under these four categories --keep, donate, sell, trash-- and go from there.

Fill that Donation Box

You’ve likely heard that old proverb on how one person’s trash is another person’s treasure. Fall is a great time to donate those things that you’d like to replace or that no longer fit or serve their purpose. Instead of filling your packing boxes with stuff you don’t need, why not donate:

  • Winter clothing (coats, boots, sweaters, mitts, and toques)
  • Older appliances and used furniture
  • Kids toys and clothing
  • Old dishes and housewares
  • Books

See What Can Be Sold

While donating is typically an easier option, you may want to consider selling items that still have value and are in good shape. Selling used belongings, whether online or via a garage sale, can take time and can sometimes be cumbersome. To make sure your items bring in what they’re worth, set a deadline for how much time you want to spend listing your item (with photos, description, etc.), answering questions from potential buyers, and storing them until they are sold.

Some of the best places to sell used belongings include:

  • Facebook local used/wanted groups
  • Kijiji/Craig’s List
  • Local news classified sites
  • eBay
  • Consignment stores
  • Yard sales

Bring Storage to Your Door

Besides renting an indoor storage unit at Space Centre Storage, another option is mobile storage, which brings the storage to your door. A MI-BOX® storage container is a quick and easy way to store excess belongings, including furniture, appliances, and more. All you have to do is contact Space Centre Storage to arrange a MI-BOX® to be delivered to your driveway or parking spot. Fill the container by keeping it on your property for as long as you need it, or arrange for one of our drivers to pick it up to deliver it to our storage facility or a location of your choice.
