Spread Your Wings: What to Look for in Long-term Local Storage

Posted on September 27, 2018

Long term local storage

Don't rely on the shack on your property to provide secure storage over the long term. Instead look for local storage facilities that offer protective, spacious and climate-controlled options.

If you're a snowbird who tends to flock south when the first frost appears or are a business or organization that only operates when the grass is green, see how long-term local storage services can help you so that you can spread your wings and fly. Learn what to look for, what to consider, and how to best prepare and pack your belongings so they remain protected.

See What Long-term Storage Entails

Long-term storage usually means you require some kind of storage space for more than 90 days. This could be for reasons such as an extended vacation, a transition such as a move where assets need to be combined or divided, a seasonal break from operations, or for leasing additional commercial storage space for your business.

Learn What Storage Rental Options are Available

When looking for a secure long-term storage, consider what type of space and services you will need. Will you need on-site storage or a portable storage container, which you can fill up and keep on your property or have picked up and stored away at the storage facility, or are you looking for something compact such as a mini storage unit or a self-storage locker? Do you require secure RV or boat storage over winter, or a large warehouse or commercial rental space for excess stock or for large equipment? Will you require moving services such as a truck or offloading equipment for heavy items?

Consider the Time of Year You Will Need Indoor Storage

The weather and time of year should also be considerations when renting long-term storage. Check to see if the business offers heated and climate controlled commercial and personal storage spaces that will protect your belongings from elements such as damp and mould. You'll also want to make sure that there is no lack of ventilation in your storage unit so that goods aren't damaged from stale air.

Consider Your Time Frame

If you plan to use your storage locker for more than a year, see what kind of accessibility your storage facility offers over the years. Ask if there are any long-term rates or deals. Read your rental agreement and ask what happens to your belongings if you miss a payment for any reason such as a death in the family.

Make Sure to Pack and Protect Your Items

When placing items in long-term storage, make sure you pack them the right way to ensure maximum protection:

  • Place your belongings in airtight plastic containers instead of cardboard packing boxes.
  • Vacuum seal items such as clothes and linens to protect them from mould and invasive insects and to save space.
  • Use climate controlled document storage services to protect paper and paintings from fading.
  • Cover furniture with protective blankets or wrap items in stretch wrap.

If you know you will need some of your belongings sooner than other items, place them at the front of your unit so that they can be accessed easily.
